The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting worse and it just always feels so dark! Why not take a look at our list of places to visit for some much-needed winter sunshine!
Only 3.5 hours from the UK but still with a feel of the exotic, Morocco is a diverse destination with long sandy beaches and temperatures of around 20 degrees in winter. The delightful mix of African culture and European influences. There are plenty of modern hotel chains to choose from in the beach resorts as well as more rural boutique options in the shadow of the stunning Atlas Mountains. If you prefer city life, Marrakech has it all; dazzling culture, a long and varied history, shopping in the brightly coloured markets and architectural wonders. Don’t miss Djemaa el-Fnaa, the busiest square in all of Africa, packed with street entertainers and vibrant markets.
The periods of calm between the trade winds of the Seychelles mean that November is the perfect time to visit, especially if you’re looking to dive or snorkel. The water temperature can sometimes reach an astounding 29 degrees and visibility is often 30 metres plus! Fishing is another popular activity in the Seychelles and whether you’re an experienced fisherman or enthusiastic beginner, there are opportunities for big-game fishing, fly-fishing and the traditional technique of bottom-fishing alike. Don’t miss the International Fishing Competition which takes place in November.
If you’re looking for a destination that’s baking hot this winter (temperatures are usually around 30 degrees) then look no further! However, it’s important to remember that there may be the odd bout of heavy rain and humidity in the winter as well. This means that resorts are at their cheapest so you can revel in a high end holiday without the high end price tag! With plenty of activities to choose from including scuba diving, snorkelling, yoga and seaplane flights, you’re guaranteed plenty of fun in the sun!
With virtually no rain, temperatures of around 30 degrees and 10 hours of sun each day, Kerala is the perfect winter sun destination. Fort Cochin is one of Kerala’s hottest tourist spots so be sure to take in the beautiful architecture as well as a boat ride across the breathtaking blue lagoons and backwaters to get a glimpse of rural life. There are plenty of beaches to visit across Kerala but Maraikulam is well known for some of the most beautiful.
South Africa is perfect for those travelling with children as, despite the 12 hour flight, there is only a two hour time difference from the UK meaning there’s no danger of jet lag! With some of the longest aerial cable trails, there’s plenty of adventure to be had. Try the Drakensberg Canopy Tour at Kwa-Zulu-Natal where you can bravely hurtle along, high above the forest floor, admiring the lush forests as you go. Make sure to visit the less explored Overberg Coast with wide beaches, restaurants and wineries and a sensational coastal reserve (De Hoop Nature Reserve), perfect for hikers, cyclists and bird and whale watchers.
A favourite among families, and with temperatures around 24 to 25 degrees in November, Florida will always be a popular winter sun destination. There is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, from luxury hotels to villas and apartments and there’s definitely no end of entertainment with many theme parks across the state and over 1,350 miles of coastline. If you’re visiting in November, be sure to take in the Apalachicola-based Florida Seafood Festival with its oyster eating contest or visit the village of Baytowne Wharf where you can stroll the streets adorned with twinkling lights while sipping a delicious glass of champagne.
