Life on Board & Ashore
Embarking on a yacht charter with friends and family guarantees to deliver life-long memories. If you are planning your first family charter you may find a slightly larger motor yacht more comfortable. Head for a mainstream destination where all facilities and conveniences are on hand, gently cruising along the coastline focussing on one or two ports or islands, so that you can hop ashore whenever you like as you get used to life on board.
With children it’s all about keeping them entertained and their eyes wide open – combining relaxation on board, fun trips ashore, dropping by to visit places of interest, shopping and of course enjoying the array of water sports equipment available. The key is variety. Choose a yacht offering versatile living spaces, great onboard facilities, good audio-visual and entertainment systems (invaluable if the weather turns), and a wide selection of water toys.
For those who have enjoyed previous yachting holidays, or if your party is adults only, you may have more confidence heading out to the open sea and exploring islands a little more off the beaten track. Or perhaps you have interests in local culture, fabulous local cuisine, history or wildlife – we can tailor your charter so that you can enjoy your favourite passions.
Cabins & Crew
The number of crew essentially depends on the size of the yacht, ranging from two or three on smaller vessels, up to 15+ on larger superyachts. Chefs, stewardesses and deck crew are there for your comfort and safety. Captains take care of the everyday running of the ship – securing ports and liaising with local authorities. Hand-picked by the owners, together the crew work tirelessly to ensure the privacy and relaxation of your party and are the key to any successful cruise.
Chartering a yacht is like spending time at a luxurious hotel – but having it all to yourself. If you have specific dietary requirements, it’s not a problem as your chef will plan menus accordingly. Need a cabin for a nanny? Many yachts have quarters for staff. Enjoy spa treatments? Many crew members are qualified beauty/massage therapists, but if not, one can be brought on board when in port.
Yacht FAQs
The number of guests is determined by the yacht’s size and number of cabins. On most yachts, the maximum number of charter guests allowed to sleep onboard – by law – is 12.
No. Your charter can be any amount of days you choose. We can arrange anything from day charters, to two weeks or even month-long holidays. Dates will depend on availability.
Charter rates include the yacht with crew service and all necessary equipment, fully insured for marine risks.
The charter rate does not include VAT, provisioning (ie food & drinks), fuel charges, electronic communications, harbour or specific marina fees and any local taxes. If embarkation and/or disembarkation take place at a different location from the yacht’s home port, delivery/return fees and expenses will also be charged.
Yes. For most charters VAT will be applied at the local rate of the country at which you start your charter from.
Soon after your charter is confirmed, we will send you a preference form to begin the planning of the charter. This will include all preferences and special requirements of your guests, covering dietary preferences, medical requirements, information on allergies, activities and entertainment requests. It will also include a preferred sailing itinerary; with any specific ports you would like to visit along the way. The form will be sent onto the captain of the yacht for the crew to start preparing for your charter.
Before you board, we will ask you to pay an Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is usually a charge of 30% of the charter fee. This is used to provision the yacht with food and drinks for the charter and also covers your fuel costs and any additional berthing requirements.
You can add funds to your APA at any point during the charter, in cash directly to the Captain.
Your Captain will keep a record (and receipts) of how your APA has been spent and will show you the exact amount leftover at the end of the charter. This will then be reimbursed to you.
Crew gratuities are not obligatory, but it’s customary to leave 10% to 20% of the total charter fee, upon discretion and based on satisfaction. The best way to make sure that all crew members are recognized equally is to entrust the distribution of gratuities to the captain.
In most countries a license is necessary in order to use certain water toys (such as jet skis and wave runners). There may also be an age limit. Certain areas prohibit the use of motorised water toys altogether. If your yacht carries scuba equipment, a certified PADI license or equivalent is necessary. If you do not have the required certificates, depending on location, we can arrange for an instructor to come onboard the yacht during your charter.
Once the availability of your chosen yacht has been confirmed, you will receive a MYBA Charter Agreement, defining the terms and conditions, obligations and rights of each party. A deposit of 50% of the total charter fee is required upon signature of the MYBA Charter Agreement in order to confirm your booking. The remaining 50%, plus the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), together with any VAT taxes, delivery/redelivery fees and any additionally agreed charges, is due minimum one month before the charter commences. The date will be specified on the contract.
